A Deal is Reached to End the Government Shutdown

The U.S. Senate reached a deal bipartisan to reopen federal government after more than a week of gridlock. After days of intense negotiations, the agreement appears to be supported by both Senate Democrats as well as Republicans. This will allow the government shutdown to end.

Angus King, Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan were the driving forces behind this deal. They worked with several GOP members. Sources familiar with the negotiations who spoke to Politico said that the deal has “more” than enough Democratic support for it to pass through the Senate. The House passed a stopgap funding measure that will be used as stepping stone for broader package of funds. Lawmakers should vote on Sunday night.

This new agreement will fund key government departments for the remainder of fiscal year. These include the Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration. It also includes military construction projects and the operations of Congress. A continuing resolution announced Sunday night would fund all remaining agencies through the end of January.

John Thune, the Senate majority leader (R-S.D. ), has agreed to compromise by giving Democrats a vote in December on extending Affordable Care Act subsidies that are set to expire at the end of this year. As part of the compromise, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) has agreed to allow Democrats to vote on the extension of Affordable Care Act subsides that are set to expire by the end the year. Democrats can decide which version of the extension is considered. This deal ensures federal employees who have been furloughed during the shutdown, will receive their backpay and be hired again once the government opens.

As the shutdown enters its sixth week and hundreds of thousands federal workers are affected by it, essential services have been halted, while public patience is being strained, lawmakers were under increasing pressure. This political dispute, which started over differences regarding Obamacare subsidies, and spending levels for the long term, has become a test of both parties.

According to reports, President Donald Trump supports the deal. Conservative commentators applauded the agreement, saying that it heavily favored the GOP’s position in negotiations.

Political commentator Eric Daugherty, writing on X.com said that “President Trump gave Senate Republicans incredible leverage forcing’moderate Democrats’ to cave.” The funding will continue until Jan. 30, 2019. No Obamacare subsidies. What is the only major concession made by Republicans? Just allow a vote on the ACA next month. “There is no guarantee that it will pass or be supported.”

Some praised the agreement as a victory for Trump. They pointed out that Democrats had failed to get new spending commitments, or long-term extension of ACA provisions.

Before it gets to President Trump, the Senate will likely move swiftly to approve the bill and then send it on to the House to be approved. The government will immediately reopen once the measure is signed. This ends one of the most prolonged shutdowns ever in the modern history of the United States.

The deal may resolve the crisis in the near term, but it could lead to another funding battle early next year as the temporary measure comes to an end. The long, grueling weeks of furloughs and political blame-pointing are finally coming to an end.
