The UK government has created a new elite police division tasked with monitoring social media for so-called “anti-migrant sentiment,” as tensions rise across the country over unchecked migration and rising crime.
The unit, assembled under Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer, will operate under the Home Office and aims to gather “social media intelligence” to track potential civil unrest. Officers will be drawn from police forces across the nation.
Crackdown on Speech, Not Crime
Instead of addressing rising migrant-related crime, the government is focusing its efforts on silencing its own citizens. The move comes after backlash over how authorities handled migrant-linked riots last year.
The Telegraph reported that the unit is being formed to catch “early signs” of unrest — but critics say it’s just a cover for policing thought and crushing free expression.
On Saturday, protesters across cities including Norwich, Leeds, and Bournemouth gathered to demand action. More demonstrations were planned through the weekend.
Farage: ‘Sinister and Dangerous’
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage slammed the move, calling it “the beginning of the state controlling free speech.”
“It is sinister, dangerous, and must be fought,” Farage said. “Reform UK will do just that.”
Online Safety Laws Fuel Censorship
The government’s new “online safety laws” — widely seen as censorship — have already led to suppression of posts covering the protests.
The newly launched division will be named the National Internet Intelligence Investigations Team. Critics say it marks another step in Britain’s decline into a surveillance state.
