Conservative Congressman Ralph Norman Announces Run for Governor

Rep. Ralph Norman, one of the most conservative voices in Congress, announced Friday he will run for governor of South Carolina in 2026. Current Governor Henry McMaster is term-limited and cannot seek re-election.

Norman’s campaign told the Associated Press he plans to file official paperwork Friday, with a formal launch scheduled Sunday in Rock Hill—his home district.

Unorthodox Campaign

Norman, 72, has weighed a run for years and was even rumored to be considering a primary challenge to Sen. Lindsey Graham. Instead, he’s jumping into a crowded gubernatorial primary without the endorsement of President Donald Trump—a rare move in today’s GOP.

The Republican field already includes Attorney General Alan Wilson and Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette. U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace is also expected to join the race soon.

Record of Support for Trump Agenda

Norman has consistently backed Trump’s America First agenda in Congress:

  • Opposed both Trump impeachment efforts

  • Voted not to certify the 2020 election

  • Supported all major Trump-backed legislation

He also voted for the recent “Big Beautiful Bill,” despite early skepticism from some in the House Freedom Caucus.

Haley Connection Raises Questions

In 2024, Norman was one of just two House Republicans to endorse former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley in the presidential primary. He frequently joined her on the campaign trail before she exited the race after losing her home state.

Norman and Haley both entered the state legislature in 2004 and became close allies. Norman said he backed Haley because she could serve two terms, unlike Trump, who is limited to one more.

DeMint: Trump Could Hold a Grudge

Former Senator Jim DeMint acknowledged Norman’s Haley endorsement could pose a challenge.

“Trump will probably hold it against Ralph for endorsing Nikki,” DeMint told the AP. “But, just like Trump, Ralph is very loyal. He’s not afraid of Trump—he’s just not someone who backs down from pressure.”
