Minnesota Democrat Sen. Tina Smith was hospitalized Wednesday after falling ill at the Capitol, her office confirmed—leaving Democrats short a critical vote just hours before the Senate’s high-stakes recession package showdown.
According to a statement from her staff, Smith began feeling unwell while working and was sent to George Washington University Hospital for evaluation.
She is expected to remain overnight “out of an abundance of caution.”
No further details were given about her condition.
Fewer Obstacles for GOP Tonight
Smith’s absence comes at a pivotal moment.
With the Senate divided 50-50, Democrats were once again counting on Vice President JD Vance to cast a tie-breaking vote—just as he did last night. But with Smith sidelined, Republicans now hold a 50–49 advantage going into tonight’s vote on the recession rollback package.
Vance, who was in Pennsylvania earlier Wednesday, may not even be needed if the GOP holds its votes.
Smith Set to Retire
Sen. Smith, 66, previously announced she would not seek re-election in 2026.
Her absence not only impacts tonight’s vote, but may signal the beginning of an early wind-down for one of the Senate’s more low-profile liberals.
