Anthony Bernal, top aide to Jill Biden and longtime White House insider, invoked the Fifth Amendment during closed-door testimony this week — refusing to answer questions about a potential cover-up of former President Joe Biden’s declining mental state.
Bernal, often referred to as the former first lady’s “work husband,” stonewalled investigators from the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, according to Chairman James Comer (R-KY).
Bernal Stays Silent
“Anthony Bernal just invoked the Fifth Amendment during his congressional deposition,” Comer revealed Tuesday.
According to Comer, Bernal was specifically asked:
He refused to answer both.
Comer called it a “historic scandal” and blasted the Biden team’s refusal to cooperate.
“This week, new reports confirm that Biden aides took unauthorized executive actions while Biden’s mental condition declined,” Comer said. “It’s no surprise Bernal pleaded the Fifth — he’s trying to shield himself from criminal liability.”
Pattern of Obstruction
The subpoena for Bernal came after Project Veritas released undercover footage showing former DNC Vice Chair David Hogg accusing Bernal of “wielding unchecked power” in the White House.
Bernal was originally scheduled to testify Thursday, but backed out after learning that former Biden aide Neera Tanden was denied executive privilege during her testimony earlier in the week.
Bernal reportedly told the committee he would not participate in a transcribed interview about the scandal.
The White House has not denied reports that Biden aides and family members performed executive functions without authorization as the 46th president became mentally unfit to serve.
Comer: “Americans Deserve the Truth”
“This is a matter of national security,” Comer said. “If unelected officials — or family members — were secretly running the White House, that is an unprecedented abuse of power. Americans deserve full transparency and accountability.”
