Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, will face indictment in California.
New federal charges against Hunter Biden are scheduled to be brought on Thursday, according to two persons familiar with the situation.
The allegations brought by special counsel David Weiss were not immediately disclosed, but one source indicated they are tax-related.
The White House declined to comment on the president’s son’s allegations, referring news outlets to Hunter Biden’s personal attorneys as well as the Justice Department.
Additional charges would be a significant move in the FBI probe that has sparked House Republicans’ concern.
Following the failure of a plea deal, Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to federal tax charges in July. In August, a federal court dismissed the misdemeanor accusations. Biden was supposed to plead guilty to two federal misdemeanor counts of failing to pay taxes.
Hunter Biden was indicted on federal firearms charges in September in connection with the president’s son having a pistol while taking narcotics. Two of the allegations state that when Biden purchased a gun, he filled out a form stating that he was not using illegal narcotics. Another count claims he was in possession of a handgun while under the influence of a drug. He entered a not guilty plea.
In August, Attorney General Merrick Garland nominated Weiss as special counsel to handle the Hunter Biden probe.
Weiss requested a federal judge on Monday to reject Hunter Biden’s plea to subpoena former President Donald Trump and other former officials.
“His allegations and subpoena requests focus on likely inadmissible, far-reaching, and non-specific categories of documents concerning the actions and motives of individuals who did not make the relevant prosecutorial decision in his case,” Weiss’ team said.
The latest charges come as the president’s congressional adversaries use Hunter Biden’s legal troubles as rhetorical fodder against his father. House Republicans subpoenaed him in November, and Hunter Biden’s legal team has stated that he is willing to appear publicly before the House Oversight Committee next week.
Special Counsel David Weiss has been gathering information for possible criminal tax charges against Biden using a federal grand jury in Los Angeles.
Hunter Biden pled not guilty in U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware in October to federal gun charges stemming from Weiss’ years-long investigation.
