Dana Loesch said the palace intrigue over Hegseth and DeSantis for Secretary of Defense is because of operatives and influencers jockeying for position for the 2028 election. She called it a proxy war.
She cites something that was leaked to Maggie Haberman which she repeated on CNN, saying that Trump couldn’t find anyone in his orbit that liked DeSantis for SecDef and so he decided to let Hegseth go with it and see if he could successfully fight for the nomination.

Loesch said, in part:
“This whole thing with Hegseth and DeSantis…and I know both of them and I like both of them. This is all a proxy war from influencers who are trying to maintain their influence in four years when Trump leaves office. It’s a proxy war for that. It’s all this is. These are operatives who are trying to power jockey – because those are the people are who are talking. Those are the ones who are chattering. Someone leaked this to [Haberman]. …There are people in his circle, some of them are repeat offenders at leaking to legacy press. We saw this happen in the first term… I think Trump has gotten rid of a lot of them (leakers), but some of them are still there because some of this stuff is getting leaked out. [Haberman] is not the first person to say this. I have been hearing this chatter for three weeks.”
And by proxy war I mean…there are operatives who are new to the game of being an operative who think that they have to have their proxy battle for 2028 now. They think that this is a proxy between Vance and DeSantis and they think that if they have Hegseth as SecDef, they can keep DeSantis out…
I’ll add that one thing. Loesch said that she heard that the SecDef offer was made twice to DeSantis, but he told Trump he wanted to finish what he was elected to do in Florida. She said her understanding is that it wasn’t a rejection of Trump…
