According to a recent poll conducted by Quinnipiac University, nearly two-thirds of Americans hold the belief that the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) case against former President Trump for mishandling classified documents after his presidency is primarily politically motivated.
The survey, released on Wednesday, revealed that 62 percent of respondents think the federal charges against Trump are driven by political considerations, while 34 percent believe they are rooted in legal concerns.
Breaking down the results along party lines, a significant majority of registered Republicans, 91 percent, perceive the DOJ’s case against Trump as politically motivated.
Among registered independent respondents, 65 percent share the same view, whereas 28 percent of registered Democrats believe the charges are politically driven.
In terms of gender, 64 percent of male respondents consider the DOJ’s case against Trump to be mainly politically motivated, compared to 59 percent of female respondents, as indicated by the poll.
Analyzing responses by age group, 67 percent of respondents aged 18 to 34 believe that the DOJ’s case against the former president is primarily politically motivated, while 53 percent of those aged 65 or older hold the same opinion.
Regarding racial demographics, 59 percent of white respondents perceive the DOJ’s case against Trump as politically motivated, compared to 67 percent of Hispanic respondents and 52 percent of Black respondents.
The poll also found that 51 percent of respondents believe Trump should face criminal charges for his handling of classified documents after leaving the White House, while 34 percent said they have closely followed the news regarding Trump’s federal charges.
Trump, who launched his third presidential campaign in November, faces 37 federal counts related to the mishandling of classified records at his Mar-a-Lago residence and his attempts to prevent the government from recovering the documents. Earlier this month, Trump pleaded not guilty during a court appearance in Miami.
The Quinnipiac University poll was conducted from June 15 to 19, with a total of 1,776 respondents participating. The poll has a margin of error of 2.3 percentage points.
