A tragic incident unfolded in Kraków on Saturday afternoon, resulting in the loss of six lives and injuring at least 15 others, as reported by Polish officials. This took place around 3 p.m. in the Main Market Square, an area known for tourism and recognized for its historic UNESCO significance.
The shooter, driving a black Subaru, targeted civilians in the square after entering from Sławkowska Street. Eyewitnesses noted that the assault seemed indiscriminate amidst the usual hustle and bustle of locals and tourists frequenting cafes and historic landmarks like St. Mary’s Basilica.
In a related occurrence, a tram passing nearby received fire from the vehicle, causing a window to shatter; fortunately, no injuries were reported in that incident.
Police have revealed that the shooter was a Polish national acting alone, apprehended after a confrontation with law enforcement near the Dietla and Stradomska intersection. During this encounter, the police shot and injured him before taking him into custody.
Equipped with military-style attire and a military-type firearm, the suspect had an array of additional weapons and ammunition in his vehicle.

“The bravery of the Kraków police enabled them to intervene immediately, leading to the swift capture of the assailant,” posted Kierwiński on X.

As of the latest updates, no motive for the shooting had been disclosed, nor had officials provided further details about the suspect, beyond confirming he is in his mid-20s.
