Trump Elevates MAGA Strategist, Sparking Democratic Fury

President Donald Trump has named Stephen Miller, a dedicated MAGA supporter, as the new chief of staff at the White House, triggering a dramatic wave of reactions from Democrats and the liberal press just days after the midterm elections.

The announcement came on Friday, with Miller, a key architect of Trump’s immigration policies and a trusted adviser, set to replace Susie Wiles on November 9.

The reaction from Democratic Rep. Don Beyer of Virginia quickly captured attention.

During a segment on BBC Newsnight, he likened Miller to an infamous cinematic villain.

“Stephen Miller is probably the single darkest force – the Darth Vader of this country,” Beyer remarked.

This dramatic comparison came as Democrats grasped at Trump’s decision to elevate Miller instead of distancing himself from the policies that led to recent electoral losses.

Beyer further expressed his dismay, saying, “I’m gonna go cry for the next half hour,” as noted in the same clip from BBC.

The fervent remarks highlighted the fierce opposition from Democrats towards Miller, known for his assertive stance on immigration and border security.

Trump, however, expressed his unwavering support for his adviser.

Making the news public on Truth Social, he lauded Miller’s promotion while thanking Wiles for her service.

“I am pleased to announce that Mr. Stephen Miller, the current Deputy Chief of Staff of the Trump Administration, and one of my most trusted advisors, will become the Chief of Staff starting Monday, November 9, 2026. Susie Wiles, who has done an outstanding job, will be moving over to the Trump Political Operation. I want to thank her for her service as Chief of Staff — She has done a great job!” Trump wrote.

Miller’s promotion marks a significant step in his long tenure with Trump, who has worked closely with him since the beginning of his presidential journey.

In Trump’s previous term, Miller was pivotal in formulating strong immigration policies, focusing on border security and illegal immigration restrictions.

He returned to the White House in early 2025 as deputy chief of staff, continuing to have a vital role in shaping domestic strategies.

Now, Miller will manage White House operations as Trump braces for two years of a split Congress.

The decision was met with backlash from former Obama adviser David Axelrod, who claimed that Miller played a large role in the Republican Party’s midterm failures.

“Few did more to contribute to the debacle the @gop just endured than Stephen Miller. The backlash to his brutal ICE raids and nativist rants can be seen in returns all over the country. And for that, he’s: PROMOTED?!” Axelrod posted on X.

This criticism aligns with a broader Democratic narrative blaming current immigration policies for electoral struggles.

Yet, the election outcomes alone can’t definitively link Miller’s strategies to these losses, as various factors, including concerns over the economy and inflation, also played significant roles.

Former CNN correspondent Jim Acosta joined the chorus, asserting that Trump’s decision signaled a desire for more of Miller’s hardline approach.

“Totally predictable. He thinks the country wants more Stephen Miller,” Acosta tweeted.

The fallout illustrates the profound divisions surrounding Miller, who has persistently championed the administration’s strict immigration initiatives.

For Trump, promoting Miller places a loyal ally in charge of crucial White House operations, managing access to the president and overseeing daily functions.

This move coincides with Republicans preparing to relinquish congressional control following the recent elections.

With Democrats gaining more power over committees and priorities, Trump may face new challenges in advancing his agenda.

Nonetheless, Trump retains essential executive authority and veto power, making effective coordination with congressional Republicans vital.

Susie Wiles, who played a key role in Trump’s successful 2024 campaign, is transitioning into his political operation, signifying a significant leadership shift, although Trump commended her contributions publicly.

Miller’s rise reflects Trump’s continued commitment to immigration priorities, despite Democrat victories.

The fierce reactions from Beyer, Axelrod, and Acosta indicate that this appointment has become a focal point of contention between the administration and its adversaries.

Miller will officially take on his new role as chief of staff on November 9, succeeding Wiles.
