Significant Resignation in Trump’s Justice Department

A notable prosecutor appointed by President Trump has unexpectedly stepped down from his role in the Justice Department. Jason Reding Quiñones, who served as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, announced his immediate resignation on November 6.

His exit comes shortly after Republicans faced considerable setbacks in the midterm elections, marking a substantial change within one of the nation’s critical law enforcement positions.

Quiñones, appointed in August 2025, did not disclose his reasons for resigning. In his statement, he expressed gratitude for his time in public service.

He lauded the honor of serving in various capacities, including his military service and his role as a judge in Florida. “Public service has been the honor of my lifetime,” he stated.

His expression of thanks also extended to President Trump and to the dedicated federal staff in South Florida. He emphasized the privilege of collaborating with law enforcement to ensure community safety.

Quiñones’ role was pivotal, overseeing critical prosecutions in South Florida, which includes Miami and the Florida Keys. His office tackled major issues such as violent crime, drug trafficking, and corruption.

Impact of His Departure

The resignation poses questions about the future direction of his office, especially in light of politically sensitive investigations he was managing concerning Trump and his associates.

While his tenure was marked by controversy, including inquiries into Russian election interference and the handling of classified documents, no indictments had been issued prior to his exit.

His background as a Miami native and son of a Cuban political refugee shaped his extensive public service career, including time with the National Security Division focused on counterterrorism.

Attorney General Todd Blanche praised Quiñones’ dedication, particularly towards law enforcement initiatives addressing violent crime and international criminal threats.

Quiñones concluded his acknowledgment with a heartfelt expression of patriotism, stating, “God bless America.” His immediate departure leaves uncertainty around the leadership in the Southern District of Florida as changes unfold within the Justice Department.
