Iran’s New Conditions for U.S. Negotiations on Nuclear Deal

Iran has sent a fresh nuclear proposal to the United States via Qatari intermediaries, insisting on significant concessions from Washington before any further negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict can commence.

The document, submitted on Thursday, lists seven conditions that Tehran wants addressed before diplomatic discussions proceed, according to a senior official who spoke to Reuters.

The Trump administration is currently reviewing the proposal, as tensions over Iran’s nuclear ambitions continue to mount.

Tehran’s demands pose a considerable obstacle to achieving diplomatic progress, particularly as the U.S. maintains its focus on curbing Iran’s nuclear activities.

Among the stipulations are calls for America to compensate Iran for damages from the ongoing conflict, lift economic sanctions, and cease its naval blockade of Iranian ports.

Additionally, Iran desires the release of billions of dollars in frozen assets and a scaling back of the American military presence in the Middle East.

Moreover, the proposal insists on a cessation of regional hostilities, particularly the conflicts involving Iranian-backed groups in Lebanon and Gaza.

Importantly, Tehran seeks a permanent end to hostilities rather than merely a temporary ceasefire, reflecting a hardening stance in negotiations.

These demands exert immense pressure on U.S. officials, who assert that Iran’s nuclear capabilities must be part of any comprehensive diplomatic negotiation.

Iranian officials are asserting that they expect concessions as a prerequisite for any substantive dialogue, a position reiterated by Iranian security official Mohsen Rezaei during a recent visit to Russia.

He emphasized that negotiations and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz are contingent upon Iran’s conditions being met.

This strategic waterway remains a focal point in the conflict due to its critical role in transporting oil and energy resources from the region.

The challenges presented by sanctions and frozen assets are compounded by the differing perspectives on responsibility for the war’s outbreak.

The conflict escalated on February 28, when American and Israeli forces launched strikes against Iran, prompting Tehran to retaliate with aggressive actions targeting Israel and Gulf nations housing U.S. military assets.

Hostilities have also spread to other regions, with Hezbollah engaging in exchanges with Israeli forces in Lebanon and Houthi militants attacking Saudi Arabian infrastructure.

This expanding confrontation complicates diplomatic efforts and raises the stakes for negotiators pursuing a sustainable resolution.

Qatar continues to play a vital role as a mediator between Washington and Tehran, facilitating discussions amidst the challenging landscape of direct negotiations.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei indicated that their seven-point proposal would form the foundation for forthcoming talks with American representatives.

It has been reported that Iranian negotiators recently left discussions in Doha while a draft of the proposal circulates among facilitators.

Intensifying discussions come in light of fears that military operations could resume following the recent U.S. midterm elections.

While Trump has not dismissed the possibility of renewed military action, Iranian officials have warned of severe consequences if hostilities reemerge.

The conflicting stances challenge negotiators to find a balance between meeting Tehran’s demands and imposing meaningful restrictions on Iran’s nuclear agenda.

For the Trump administration, the principal challenge lies in determining whether Iran’s proposal presents a feasible avenue to conclude the conflict, all while safeguarding U.S. nuclear security interests.

Meanwhile, Iran aims to make conditions surrounding sanctions relief, financial compensation, and adjustments to U.S. military strategy prerequisites for any future discussions.

No agreement has surfaced yet, and the U.S. has not publicly acknowledged Iran’s demands.
