Democratic Leader Promises Investigation of Trump Allies in Business and Law

U.S. Representative Jamie Raskin (D-MD) is preparing to take over the House Judiciary Committee in January, following the Democrats’ midterm electoral gains. He has revealed intentions to investigate private corporations and law firms that he claims “collaborated” with the Trump Administration.

During a conversation with MS NOW host Nicolle Wallace, Raskin expressed that Democrats will actively target corporations involved in what he describes as lawlessness associated with Donald Trump. He insisted that similar actions have been taken previously and will continue.

His stated focus includes law firms that made arrangements following executive orders from President Trump’s second term. These orders impacted firms based on their involvement with certain clients and personnel choices, prompting some to align with administration priorities by altering their diversity practices and providing legal services.

Raskin remarked, “There are several heroic law firms that have resisted illegal activities, yet major firms like Paul Weiss have yielded to pressure from Trump and made significant concessions.” This sentiment underlines his commitment to confronting compliance issues among these entities.

The congressman noted that his office has already reached out to several law firms, yet many have been uncooperative so far. He believes that with the power of subpoenas, these firms will eventually be compelled to reveal the truth. Raskin emphasized that compliance with subpoenas is mandatory under the law.

Former letters sent by the Democratic minority sought information from firms like Kirkland & Ellis and others, with some firms pledging significant pro bono work under these arrangements.

With the expanded authority of the Judiciary Committee, documents and testimony can be mandated in ways that minority requests previously could not.

Raskin also raised concerns about Attorney General Todd Blanche, suggesting he could face impeachment, labeling the Justice Department under his watch as a tool of political vendetta for the president. He further suggested the possibility of a third impeachment against Trump, stating, “Impeachment is a legitimate tool for us. We will use it if necessary.”
