GOP Senator Rounds Achieves Landslide Victory in South Dakota Re-Election

Republican Senator Mike Rounds has celebrated a triumphant re-election in South Dakota, defeating independent candidate Brian Bengs by an impressive 21-point margin according to initial reports.

The Associated Press announced the results on Tuesday evening, confirming Rounds’ third consecutive six-year term.

With 99% of votes counted, Rounds garnered 60.5% of the vote, translating to 184,584 votes versus Bengs’ 120,502, who received 39.5%. This result far exceeded the 51%-41% polling average noted by analysts.

“Mike Rounds was among the Senate Republicans who outperformed polling expectations,” commented Jason Corley from Quantus Insights.

Corley’s firm had forecasted a significant Republican lead in its October survey. They showed Rounds ahead 57.2% to 36.5%, translating to a 20.7-point advantage. Even with voters leaning towards candidates accounted for, Rounds led 59.4% to 37.3%, marking a 22.1-point spread.

The results from the Quantus survey closely mirrored the eventual voting outcome, showing that initial predictions were nearly spot on. The polling average had accurately indicated Rounds’ lead, showcasing the effectiveness of Quantus’ methodology.

Having served South Dakota in the Senate since 2015, Rounds previously held the governorship from 2003 to 2011. Bengs, on the other hand, previously aimed to unseat Senator John Thune as a Democrat in 2022.

While some results are still pending, it’s clear that Rounds has solidified his position for another term, and the October polling numbers served as a reliable indicator of his strong standing.
