House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries from New York has officially declared his intention to run for Speaker of the House for the upcoming 120th Congress. Despite being the frontrunner, some members of the party’s progressive wing have withheld their endorsements, hinting at a possible leadership contest.
In a letter to his colleagues, Jeffries expressed gratitude for their support and requested their backing for his bid to serve as the next Speaker of the House of Representatives.
He concluded his letter by thanking them for considering him for the role, aiming to become the 57th Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.

This announcement follows the 2026 midterm elections, where Democrats regained control of the House after four years of Republican leadership. Current projections suggest a strong Democratic majority, with reports estimating around 237 seats for Democrats, although several races are still uncalled.
If successful, Jeffries would make history as the first black House Speaker. He has been leading House Democrats as Minority Leader since 2023.
In his letter, Jeffries highlighted the actions taken by House Democrats during the 119th Congress, including their opposition to the Trump-supported Big Beautiful Bill, immigration policies, and healthcare matters.
He emphasized the need for immediate action in the first 100 days to reverse Medicaid cuts, restore SNAP funding, extend tax credits tied to the Affordable Care Act, eliminate Trump tariffs, and take a stand against the war in Iran. He also mentioned the importance of accountability, indicating that the House would work to check the executive branch and combat issues like price gouging.
Newly elected House Democrats are set to meet privately in November to select their Speaker nominee before the full House vote occurs when the 120th Congress commences in early January 2027. Despite some concerns from incoming members, many Democratic aides believe no serious challenge to Jeffries is anticipated.
A few self-described socialist candidates, including incoming Representative Darializa Avila Chevalier from New York, have yet to pledge their support for Jeffries during the recent election cycle.
At present, no other candidates have publicly emerged as alternatives for Speaker. Current House Minority Whip Katherine Clark from Massachusetts is likely to take on the role of Majority Leader, making her the first woman to hold this position, while Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar from California is expected to serve as Majority Whip. Leadership elections are planned for November 18 and 19.
