Republican Mike Rogers has secured another important endorsement from a Democrat ahead of the Senate race in Michigan. Former Representative Hansen Clarke publicly backed Rogers, a former colleague, as they head into the election.
Rogers shared the endorsement on Facebook, highlighting Clarke’s support amidst growing discord within the Democratic ranks. Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed faces challenges internally, making Clarke’s endorsement impactful.
“I’m honored to have Congressman Clarke’s endorsement,” Rogers declared. He emphasized their shared commitment to prioritize Michigan, despite occasional disagreements during their time in the House.
Rogers emphasized the urgency of the moment with a clear message: “We have a state to save, Michigan.”
Clarke, who served Michigan’s Detroit-based 13th Congressional District from 2011 to 2013, has a history in Michigan politics, holding roles in both the state Senate and House.
This endorsement from Clarke adds to Rogers’ appeal, following the recent backing from Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens. Her support came just two days before the election, highlighting divisions within the Democratic Party.
Stevens, who lost to El-Sayed in the Senate primary, endorsed Rogers at Detroit’s Perfecting Church. Her decision followed a contentious dispute with El-Sayed over an advertisement she labeled as antisemitic.
By gaining both a current Democratic congresswoman and a former congressman’s endorsement, Rogers aims to challenge the seat currently held by retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters.
The outcome of this race is pivotal, potentially influencing the balance of power in the Senate. The internal Democratic split has broader implications beyond Michigan, impacting national dynamics.
In his statement, Rogers noted his relationship with Clarke, focusing on their collaborative history rather than specific policy alignments, thus framing the endorsement as a testament to their cooperative spirit despite political differences.
