In the lead-up to Michigan’s pivotal U.S. Senate election, Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) candidly criticized Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed, labeling him as suffering from ‘little man syndrome’.
During a conversation with Jewish Insider, Fetterman touched upon El-Sayed’s ongoing conflict with U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI), whom he narrowly defeated in a primary earlier this year. Notably, Stevens’ fiancé has declared he won’t support El-Sayed, while Stevens herself has publicly rebuked him over his perceived ties to Islamist and antisemitic groups.
“Rep. Haley Stevens simply held Abdul El-Sayed accountable for his views on Israel and fixation with Jewish money. El-Sayed is going after a woman and banning her from campaign events for having an opinion. El-Sayed’s overreaction demonstrates why he struggles with groups of Michigan voters,” Fetterman remarked. He continued, “He has the worst case of little man syndrome I’ve ever seen.”
Fetterman, towering at around 6 feet 8 inches, previously criticized El-Sayed’s behavior, claiming he displays what he calls “little man syndrome energy.” This came after El-Sayed disparaged him during their primary race.

El-Sayed has made headlines for his odd declarations to challenge adversaries to physical contests, often involving high school sports references. In a recent interview with The Bulwark, he stated, “If you’re coming to kick down what we’re building, I’ll fight you. Like, I’m not afraid. So I was also the kid in AP classes getting suspended for fighting.”
He also directed challenges at notable figures, including Vice President JD Vance, questioning the authenticity of his beard and asserting Vance could meet him in a weight-lifting setting. El-Sayed expressed, “If he thinks that my beard is somehow indicative of my strength, I’m happy to invite him to any weight room in any place. We could do it in D.C., and let’s see. I’d love to see him on a bench. I’d love to see him on a squat,” he complained.

Additionally, El-Sayed has invited his Republican opponent Mike Rogers to engage in a contact football match and has criticized Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s athletic capabilities, suggesting he had an inflated sense of self-confidence due to supportive parenting.
