Beloved Actress Susan Saint James Dies at 80

Susan Saint James, the beloved Emmy-winning star recognized for her performances on The Name of the Game, McMillan & Wife, and Kate & Allie, has sadly passed away at the age of 80. A representative confirmed her death on Monday, stating she succumbed to pancreatic cancer.

Her family released a touching statement to People, portraying her as a generous soul who prioritized uplifting others over material wealth. They noted that her kindness was imparted to her children, encouraging them to always be considerate and look out for those in need.

“She never met a stranger,” her family shared. Every encounter was significant for her, whether with an acquaintance or a store clerk, as she often shared her life experiences with them. A poignant example of her strength was seen when she delivered a heartfelt eulogy for her son Teddy, who tragically passed away in a plane crash in 2004, a testament to her enduring spirit even amid sorrow. Just days after the tragedy, she expressed gratitude to those who supported her family, embodying a relentless positive outlook.

Saint James is survived by her husband, Dick Ebersol, her children Sunshine Lucas, Harmony Lucas, Charlie Ebersol, and Willie Ebersol; her seven grandchildren; her sister, Mary Mercedes Dewey; and her service dog, Lola.

Born Susan Jane Miller on August 14, 1946, she spent part of her youth in France before heading to Hollywood and changing her name at 20.

She began her career under Universal Studios, landing roles such as in the 1966 TV movie Fame Is the Name of the Game, which led to her notable portrayal of research assistant Peggy Maxwell on NBC’s The Name of the Game (1968–1971).

For her outstanding work on the show, she received multiple Emmy nominations and won for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 1969.

During the years 1971 to 1976, she starred alongside Rock Hudson in the hit NBC series McMillan & Wife, which garnered her further Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe nod. Following her time on the series, she ventured into films, appearing in Outlaw Blues (1977), Love at First Bite (1979), and How to Beat the High Cost of Living (1980).

She made a triumphant return to television in 1984 as Kate McArdle on CBS’s Kate & Allie, alongside Jane Curtin, a series that ran until 1989 and earned her additional Emmy nominations. In 2008, she was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and later made guest appearances on shows like The Drew Carey Show, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Suits.

After the conclusion of Kate & Allie, Saint James chose to step back from acting to devote time to her family in Connecticut. She married Dick Ebersol in 1981 after meeting him while hosting Saturday Night Live.

Her advocacy extended beyond her acting career; she was a dedicated supporter of the Special Olympics, getting involved in the early 1970s, serving on its boards, and helping organize numerous fundraising events.

Following the tragic loss of her son Teddy in a plane accident in 2004, Saint James continued her charitable efforts, providing support to grieving parents. She also co-founded a business offering baby gifts and took part in various local activities in Connecticut.
