Crowd Overlooks AOC Amid Eid Speech Controversy

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently attended Eid al-Adha celebrations in the Bronx, but instead of receiving a warm reception, she encountered sharp criticism from conservatives online.

As captured in footage from the event, the New York Democrat was clad in a hijab, a fashion choice linked to traditional Muslim customs. Critics pointed out what they see as contradictions in her stance against patriarchy, questioning her choice to wear a garment associated with restrictive practices in certain cultures.

The event took place in Ocasio-Cortez’s district, which she has represented since 2019. Strong opinions about her approach frequently lead to heated discussion, reflecting her position as a divisive figure within the Democratic Party.

On stage with her was newly elected Mayor Zohran Mamdani, dressed in a kurta inspired by his favorite soccer team. This visual sparked further debate as it was seen by some as out of touch with AOC’s typical feminist rhetoric.

Many on social media seized on the moment, claiming that despite Ocasio-Cortez’s attempts to convey a message of unity, the crowd seemed engaged in their own conversations rather than attentive to her speech.

At the time of this incident, Ocasio-Cortez’s office had not issued a comment addressing the backlash.
