Reports about a potential memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Iran and the United States have been met with denial by Iran’s Tasnim News Agency. Affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), they assert that no final agreement has been reached.
Tasnim stated that there has been no communication to the Pakistani mediator involved in the negotiations, signaling that an official announcement will only come once an MOU is fully prepared. This response follows earlier claims from sources like Reuters and Axios, which suggested that a draft MOU had been achieved, related to extending a ceasefire and discussing Iran’s nuclear agenda.
The discussions have stemmed from weeks of indirect negotiations, largely mediated by Pakistan. They have revolved around extending a ceasefire that was established earlier in 2026 and addressing key issues such as commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, the easing of U.S. naval blockades, and the withdrawal of American troops near Iranian territory.
Despite these ongoing discussions, Iranian state media and officials continue to stress that important matters, particularly regarding sanctions relief and nuclear sequencing, are still being negotiated. Tasnim and other Iranian-aligned outlets have indicated that significant differences remain, notably that nuclear commitments are not included in early agreements.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian recently emphasized the need for Iran to brace itself against economic and political pressures during negotiations with the U.S., advising against what he terms humiliating diplomacy. Other Iranian leaders have acknowledged the progress of talks but remain cautious about predictability and the requirement for tangible, verifiable actions.
As of Thursday evening, there has been no update from President Trump regarding any progress toward a final agreement.
