Indiana GOP Leader Demands Resignation Over Chief of Staff Debacle

In the latest development from Indiana, State Treasurer Daniel Elliott has called for Secretary of State Diego Morales to step down. This demand follows a series of controversies that have plagued Morales’ office.

Elliott’s statement on May 22 highlighted serious concerns about the secretary’s conduct, particularly noting the hiring of a non-citizen who was illegally registered to vote as his chief of staff. Elliott said, “These failures have created a constant stream of controversy that has shattered confidence in the office.”

This call for resignation is echoed by other GOP figures, including U.S. Rep. Jim Banks and Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita. Rokita has recommended Morales suspend his campaign efforts, while Banks has shifted his endorsement to a challenger.

Morales is preparing for a tough battle at the upcoming Indiana GOP state convention in June, where he will face off against challengers like Max Engling, Knox County Clerk David Shelton, and former gubernatorial candidate Jamie Reitenour.

The victor will move on to the general election in November, squaring off against the Democratic nominee and Libertarian Lauri Shillings, alongside former Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard, who is also seeking the ballot as a third-party candidate.

Criticism of Morales has emerged from various quarters, including his expenditure of taxpayer funds and overseas travel. Despite this, he has signaled his intention to persist in his campaign.

On May 21, Morales stated on X that the decision regarding the Republican nominee should remain with the delegates, expressing confidence in his renomination.
