A shocking incident occurred on live television when a Mexican sports reporter faced a gunpoint carjacking during a segment at a gas station.
Fernando Vargas, a journalist with Activo Deportes, was speaking with host Ed Martinez for a program called “Bla, bla, bla Deportivo” in Morelos when an armed individual approached the vehicle.
Footage circulating on social media captures Vargas mid-sentence as the suspect reached for the driver’s side window. Suddenly, the sound of a gun being cocked echoed, and the assailant yanked the driver’s door open.
Vargas maintained his composure, while Martinez appeared visibly shocked. Without resistance, the reporter handed over his belongings and exited the car.
“The key, quick. Key, phones, and wallets, quick,” the robber urgently instructed in Spanish, as reported by Univision.
Following the incident, Martinez confirmed that Vargas was shaken but unharmed. He took to Instagram, appealing for help in identifying the assailant and encouraging viewers to share any information with law enforcement.
“Thankfully, he’s safe, but very scared,” Martinez stated. “If anyone recognizes the guy in the video, please help us and report him to the authorities. This happened in Morelos.”

In addition to his reporting work, Vargas also holds the position of communications director for Mexico’s Professional Basketball League (LNBP), which released a statement the following day, affirming his well-being and commending his professionalism amidst the crisis.
The league condemned the violence faced by its staff and called for stricter protection measures.
As of Wednesday, no arrests had been reported by Mexican authorities. They disclosed that the suspect had fled with Vargas’ wallet, phone, and other personal items.
