Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna is contemplating a subpoena against the CIA following whistleblower claims that crucial JFK assassination and MKUltra files were seized. This revelation has ignited concerns about government transparency.
Dedicating her remarks to NewsNation, Luna, who leads the House Task Force on Declassification, expressed frustration over the CIA’s actions. She noted that Congress had previously requested these documents, accusing the agency of obstructing their oversight responsibilities.
“This is concerning because there was an executive order mandating the full declassification of JFK and MKUltra files, which the CIA claimed were released or destroyed,” Luna stated. “The files in question are purportedly those that were never made public.”
The situation intensified after whistleblower James Erdman III testified in a Senate hearing, alleging that the CIA had taken back documents related to President Kennedy’s assassination and the controversial MKUltra program while they were under review for potential release.
Luna asserted that the files were part of Congress’s ongoing push for transparency initiated by former President Donald Trump. If these records are not voluntarily provided, she warned that Congress might quickly pursue subpoenas and contempt actions.
The CIA has yet to make a detailed public statement regarding these allegations. However, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence refuted claims that the CIA forcibly entered DNI Director Tulsi Gabbard’s office to retrieve materials, calling it false.
For months, Luna has been advocating for hearings related to covert government programs and political assassinations. Recently, she announced plans for a congressional hearing focusing on MKUltra, which involved questionable Cold War-era experiments.
This program became widely known during the 1970s Church Committee investigation into intelligence abuses, although many records were destroyed under orders from former CIA Director Richard Helms. The remaining documents later revealed disturbing experiments involving drugs and psychological manipulation on both willing and unsuspecting subjects.
The newest allegations have already drawn outrage from Trump supporters and advocates for transparency, who contend that the government has long concealed significant documents connected to the JFK assassination and misconduct within the intelligence community.
