Arcadia’s Mayor Eileen Wang has been indicted by federal authorities for allegedly serving as an illegal agent for the Chinese government, according to a startling announcement from the U.S. Department of Justice on Monday.
At 58, Wang has been accused of collaborating with officials tied to the Chinese Communist Party to disseminate pro-Beijing narratives within the United States, all while concealing her connection to the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
The charge carries a potential maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison, and Wang has reportedly agreed to plead guilty as part of a plea deal.

U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli stated, “Individuals in our country who covertly do the bidding of foreign governments undermine our democracy.” Assistant Attorney General for National Security John A. Eisenberg also remarked on the troubling nature of the case, given that Wang allegedly kept undisclosed ties to the Chinese regime while in public office.
Documents reveal that between 2020 and 2022, Wang collaborated with Yaoning “Mike” Sun, who has already been sentenced to four years in connection with the same issue, under the direction of Chinese officials.
The duo ran a website called “U.S. News Center,” posing as a local Chinese-American news outlet. However, it supposedly acted as a propaganda tool for Beijing, with directives issued by Chinese officials instructing them to publish favorable materials.
For instance, a 2021 WeChat conversation illustrated how a Chinese official circulated pre-written articles denying accusations of genocide in Xinjiang. Shortly thereafter, Wang allegedly published these articles on her site and sent a direct link to the official to confirm.
Additionally, prosecutors allege Wang made editorial changes to an article at the request of a Chinese official, later showcasing screenshots that recorded over 15,000 views, leading to praise from the official.
The case also links Wang to John Chen, a figure with ties to the PRC intelligence community, known to have attended high-profile Chinese Communist Party events and met with President Xi Jinping.
In 2021, Wang reportedly asked Chen to share an article from her site, stating, “This is what the Ministry of Foreign Affairs wants to send.” Chen himself was sentenced in 2024 after admitting involvement in similar activities.
The Justice Department indicated that Wang neglected to inform the U.S. Attorney General of her activities on behalf of the Chinese government, a legal requirement. Moreover, she failed to disclose that certain content on her platform was published under the instruction of Chinese officials.
Elected to the Arcadia City Council in 2022, Wang became mayor through the council’s rotating leadership model. The FBI emphasized that this case should act as a cautionary tale for others potentially involved with foreign adversaries within the United States.
“Individuals who act on behalf of foreign governments to influence our democracy will be identified, investigated, and brought to justice,” warned FBI Counterintelligence official Roman Rozhavsky.
