President Donald Trump indicated on Monday that the ceasefire with Iran is facing severe challenges, referring to it as being ‘on life support’ following Tehran’s counterproposal to the U.S. peace plan.
During a press conference in the Oval Office, Trump criticized Iran’s response, labeling it ‘unbelievably weak.’ He expressed his frustration, stating, ‘I would call it the weakest, right now, after reading that piece of garbage they sent us. I didn’t even finish reading it.’
He vividly illustrated the ceasefire’s precarious situation, saying, ‘It’s on massive life support, where the doctor walks in and says, ‘Sir, your loved one has approximately a 1% chance of living.’’
This ceasefire commenced on April 8 as tensions escalated over the war and the pivotal Strait of Hormuz, significant for global oil transport. Trump previously threatened to obliterate Iran’s ‘whole civilization’ if an agreement was not reached. Initially expected to last just two weeks, the truce was extended on April 21.

From the outset, the agreement has appeared tenuous, with both parties alleging violations amid ongoing regional hostilities.
When the ceasefire was first announced on April 7, Trump conditioned the deal on Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz. However, with shipping not returning to pre-war levels, he directed a U.S. naval blockade in the Gulf of Oman to limit Iranian maritime activity.

Despite the ceasefire, clashes have persisted. Recently, Iran attacked the United Arab Emirates, while the U.S. and Iranian forces exchanged fire in the strait, leading the Pentagon to strike two Iran-flagged oil tankers.
Last week, Trump and senior officials maintained that the ceasefire remained operational as they awaited Iran’s response to preliminary proposals for negotiations regarding Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.
