Trump Critiques Iran’s Recent Peace Negotiation Offer

President Trump has firmly rejected Iran’s most recent proposal for a peace deal, categorizing it as “totally unacceptable.”

On Truth Social, he expressed his discontent with Iran’s response, stating, “I have just read the response from Iran’s so-called ‘Representatives.’ I don’t like it — TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!” He accused Iran of manipulating U.S. negotiations for decades, concluding, “They will be laughing no longer!”

Iran’s Counterproposal

According to Iranian state media, Tehran’s response, corroborated by Pakistan, focused on a permanent cessation of hostilities on all fronts. This includes ongoing conflict involving Israel and Iran-aligned Hezbollah.

Iran also highlighted the need for secure shipping routes, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz. Their proposal emphasized halting hostilities as a priority before addressing contentious issues like Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

U.S. Conditions and Ongoing Tensions

The U.S. had put forth a comprehensive offer that aimed to terminate the ongoing war, reopen the Strait of Hormuz to international trade, and tackle Iran’s nuclear agenda immediately. In contrast, Iran has largely hindered shipping through the strait since the conflict escalated, impacting global oil and gas markets.

The U.S. has kept its blockade of Iranian ports operational since April 13, with recent military actions against Iranian tankers suspected of breaching this blockade.

Diplomatic Efforts

The White House has not provided any formal reaction to Iran’s latest response aside from Trump’s remarks. U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, indicated that the administration is committed to giving diplomacy “every chance we possibly can.”

Incidents continue to challenge the current ceasefire, with a drone attack near Qatar and additional engagements reported in UAE and Kuwait airspace attributed to Iran.

Stalled Negotiations

Pakistan has been mediating discussions, facilitating direct talks between U.S. and Iranian representatives in recent weeks. Progress has stalled, with both sides exchanging proposals without significant advancements.

Previous Iranian propositions included a 14-point plan with demands for U.S. withdrawal from certain regions, lifting sanctions, and a revised security arrangement for the Strait of Hormuz. However, the U.S. has focused on the total elimination of Iran’s uranium enrichment and has declined offers concerning strait control. Trump has expressed willingness for sanctions relief contingent upon a favorable deal.

If negotiations falter, Trump has suggested he may consider expanding military operations to safeguard trade routes through this critical area.
