Humberto Cruz, a 19-year-old right-handed pitcher for the San Diego Padres, has chosen to self-deport to Mexico after pleading guilty to a federal misdemeanor for transporting illegal aliens. This decision comes as a severe consequence for his actions.
Cruz signed with the Padres out of Monterrey, Mexico, in February 2024, receiving a $750,000 bonus. Before the legal issues arose, he was hailed as the organization’s fifth-ranked prospect by various scouting outlets.
The incident took place on October 28, 2025, near Lukeville, Arizona. Court documents reveal that Border Patrol agents noticed a brown 2020 BMW SUV with Mexican plates traveling southbound with only Cruz as the driver.
About an hour later, agents spotted the same vehicle returning north with multiple passengers, prompting a traffic stop. Cruz was identified as the driver, with two passengers being undocumented Mexican citizens.
After waiving his Miranda rights, Cruz admitted to agents that he answered a social media ad seeking drivers. He was offered $1,000 per transported person, receiving directions via pin drops on his phone, with plans to take them to Tucson and Phoenix.
Cruz acknowledged he knew his passengers were illegal and that he was motivated by financial necessity.
Initially, Cruz faced one felony count for transporting illegal aliens and a misdemeanor accessory charge. However, under a plea deal on November 13, 2025, the felony charge was dropped in exchange for his guilty plea to the misdemeanor.
He received a sentence of 30 days in jail with credit for time served. The plea agreement noted that Cruz’s conviction made his deportation from the U.S. “practically inevitable” and he waived his rights to appeal or modify his sentence.
Following the charges, Cruz was placed on the Padres’ minor-league restricted list on March 13, which bars him from receiving a salary or utilizing team facilities. Team sources confirmed his self-deportation to Mexico, resulting in the loss of his work visa for up to 10 years. He may apply for reinstatement after five years, contingent on good behavior.
Cruz offered an apology to his teammates, the organization, and fans, expressing regret for his poor judgment and the disappointment he caused. He acknowledged the impact of his actions and conveyed gratitude for the support he’s received during this challenging period.
The self-deportation effectively ends Cruz’s current involvement with the Padres, barring any changes to his visa status, putting his future in the league in serious question.
