Putin Suggests Peace Talks with Ukraine Are Nearing Conclusion

On a recent Sunday, President Vladimir Putin expressed confidence that the ongoing conflict with Ukraine is nearing resolution. This statement followed Russia’s Victory Day celebrations in Moscow, commemorating its triumph over Nazi Germany during World War II.

Putin remarked, “I think that the matter is coming to an end, but it is a serious matter,” during a press interaction after the parade said. His comments came as a three-day ceasefire took effect, a move he hopes may facilitate new discussions on European security.

Putin identified former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder as a preferable negotiation partner and indicated that a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky could only happen once a lasting peace agreement is reached. He criticized Western nations for allegedly exacerbating tensions with Russia, despite prior NATO commitments.

On May 8, U.S. President Donald Trump facilitated the ceasefire, which both Putin and Zelensky accepted. Set to last from May 9 to May 11, this truce involved a complete halt to combat operations and included a reciprocal exchange of 1,000 prisoners of war from each side.

Trump highlighted the ceasefire’s coinciding with Victory Day festivities, expressing optimism that this could pave the way for a more extended cessation of hostilities, labeling the circumstances as “the worst thing since World War Two in terms of life.” He called for a significant extension beyond the initial three days.

Ukrainian President Zelensky verified the ceasefire through a post on X, attributing the agreement to American mediation. He emphasized the humanitarian aspects, particularly the urgent return of captured Ukrainians, and confirmed the successful 1,000-for-1,000 prisoner exchange.

Zelensky instructed his team to expedite the exchange and expressed gratitude to Trump and his administration for their diplomatic contributions. The Kremlin corroborated this arrangement through aide Yuri Ushakov, acknowledging it was formulated during talks with the Trump administration.

Both nations maintain nuanced positions regarding broader peace talks. The Kremlin has indicated that negotiations brokered by Trump are currently stalled and highlighted the complexity of the issues, suggesting a lengthy road ahead for a comprehensive agreement.

Russian officials described the ceasefire as limited, showing no immediate intentions for an extension. Meanwhile, Putin reiterated Russia’s commitment to its goals but expressed a willingness to engage in certain diplomatic dialogues with European parties.

For Ukraine, Zelensky described their strategy as consistent and pragmatic, emphasizing the necessity of U.S. involvement to ensure compliance, while maintaining focus on humanitarian efforts, including prisoner exchanges.
