Charlotte’s Mayor Resigns Shortly After Reelection

Charlotte’s Mayor Vi Lyles declared her resignation on Thursday, effective June 30, marking the end of her tenure that began with her election in 2017.

Lyles, who made history as Charlotte’s first Black female mayor, stated she will not pursue another term. She emphasized her desire for more family time and the need for new leadership.

“Serving as Charlotte’s mayor has been the honor of my life,” Lyles remarked. “Now, it is time for the next phase of my life, to spend more time with my grandchildren and for someone new to lead us forward.”

With over three decades of service in city government, Lyles previously held two terms on City Council and was mayor pro tem from 2015 to 2017. Her background includes roles such as budget analyst, budget director, and assistant city manager.

During her tenure, Lyles emphasized priorities like economic growth, job creation, public safety, housing initiatives, and improvements to public transit. Last year, voters approved a tax aimed at enhancing transit infrastructure and services.

Her resignation initiates a potentially chaotic period at City Hall leading up to her exit as the city prepares for a transition in leadership.
