Minnesota’s Governor Tim Walz is under increasing federal scrutiny as Vice President JD Vance has confirmed an investigation into the state’s failure to adequately address significant fraud claims regarding taxpayer-funded programs.
The inquiry is a result of a major federal initiative executed last month in the Minneapolis area, where over 20 search warrants were conducted targeting businesses associated with child care services and autism treatment programs, among others.
Federal authorities are probing allegations concerning fraudulent Medicaid claims, exploitation of childcare assistance programs, and other abuses of taxpayer resources. Although estimates for the losses have not been finalized, Trump administration officials hinted that the ongoing investigation could uncover fraud totaling billions.
“[Minnesota is] under investigation by our great vice president,” Trump remarked on Wednesday. “They’re finding a lot.”
This emerging issue has quickly become a contentious battleground between the Trump administration and Minnesota’s Democratic leaders.
Vance has criticized Walz’s administration for not adequately addressing long-standing fraud issues, asserting that federal intervention was necessitated due to inadequate state oversight.

“We really did not get much help at all from the Governor’s office,” Vance stated on Will Cain’s show. “Where we actually did get help was from state and local law enforcement officers who we assigned to the task force because the state government wasn’t doing anything so all credit goes to people on the ground the federal officers, the state officers who are working to uncover this fraud.”
These remarks mark one of the sharpest critiques from the White House regarding Walz’s handling of the fraud situation in Minnesota.
The controversy heightened when Walz lauded the cooperative efforts between state and federal law enforcement in light of the raids, a claim that FBI Director Kash Patel challenged, asserting that federal agencies led the operation and suggesting that Minnesota officials were not pivotal to the investigation.
This latest development emerges as Minnesota grapples with the repercussions of the extensive “Feeding Our Future” fraud case, which is one of the most significant pandemic-era fraud scandals in the nation. Numerous individuals have been charged for allegedly pilfering vast sums intended for feeding children during the COVID-19 crisis.
Republicans are now contending that this recent inquiry highlights broader failures in oversight within Minnesota’s government.
Skeptics of Walz’s approach have cited claims from a former Minnesota state trooper, alleging that state officials tried to suppress deeper investigations into fraud and retaliated against those who persisted in probing sensitive issues.
Walz has firmly dismissed claims that his administration overlooked any wrongdoing. He maintains that state agencies have closely collaborated with federal investigators in identifying fraudulent actions, and he has accused the Trump administration of manipulating the situation for political gain ahead of upcoming elections.
“We catch criminals when state and federal agencies share information. Joint investigations work, and securing justice depends on it,” Walz remarked.
Even with those defenses, the pressure surrounding the investigation continues to mount.
Reportedly, the Trump administration has initiated moves to delay or freeze portions of federal Medicaid funding linked to Minnesota programs as investigators scrutinize claims surrounding fraud and oversight inadequacies. Officials indicate this initiative aims to safeguard taxpayer money while reforms are contemplated.
In parallel, Vance has suggested that the administration’s anti-fraud efforts may expand beyond Minnesota, repeatedly asserting that the federal government must adopt a significantly more aggressive stance in investigating abuses of taxpayer-funded programs.
