Amazon Faces Backlash Over Censorship of Controversial Novel

Amazon’s decision to remove paperback listings for the 1973 novel The Camp of the Saints has sparked outrage and accusations of political censorship. This action has brought renewed attention to a book that has polarized opinions for decades.

Authored by Jean Raspail, the book portrays the collapse of Western society due to mass immigration, leading to debates about its themes of race and culture. While many decry the narrative as racist and xenophobic, others view it as a prophetic warning about societal decline.

Ethan Rundell, the editor of Vauban Books, announced that the paperback was taken down on April 17, although the Kindle and audiobook formats remained available. Interestingly, the paperback is still listed on Amazon Canada.

Ethan Rundell reported that he received notification from Amazon citing the book’s violation of its ‘offensive content’ policy, yet no specific details were provided regarding the objectionable material.

“Our edition has been on Amazon since July 2025, and during that time we sold approximately 20,000 copies,” he shared.

Rundell suggested that the removal might have been spurred by a recent New York Magazine piece critical of Vice President JD Vance that mentioned the novel, invoking memories of an earlier campaign that led to a prior publisher dropping the title from circulation.

The book has received acclaim in nationalist and conservative circles. Notable figures like William F. Buckley Jr. have praised it, and it has been referenced by prominent leaders such as Viktor Orbán and Marine Le Pen.

Nathan Pinkoski from the Centre for Renewing America came to the book’s defense, asserting that it transcends merely being about race.

He emphasized that the novel was penned before immigration became a contentious political topic, urging readers to consider its cultural implications.

U.S. conservative commentator Jack Posobiec condemned Amazon’s action as a clear instance of book banning. He argued that true banned books do not exist in major retail or library outlets.

“If you can pick it up at a bookstore, it’s not banned; this is a banned book,” Posobiec remarked.

He noted that Raspail’s work has received criticism in French media as emblematic of ‘the new right,’ making the need for broad readership even more essential.

Amazon has yet to issue a public statement regarding this controversial removal. Meanwhile, Vauban Books is committed to ensuring that The Camp of the Saints remains available to readers, regardless of Amazon’s actions.

“Should Amazon not restore the paperback or if further listings are removed, we will ensure access to this title everywhere else,” Rundell concluded.
