Republican Congressman Absent From DC Due to Undisclosed Health Concerns

A Republican representative from a crucial swing district is currently missing from Congress, putting pressure on GOP leaders.

Rep. Tom Kean Jr., hailing from New Jersey, has been absent due to an undisclosed medical issue, according to his office. Although it’s been over a month since he missed votes, details regarding his condition remain unclear.

His spokesperson, Harrison Neely, stated that the congressman is anticipated to recover fully and resume his schedule soon, but no further updates have been provided.

Since March 5, Kean has not participated in any votes and has missed 37 roll-call votes since March 16. After his initial absence, his office suggested he would return shortly, but that timeline has since stretched without explanation.

Furthermore, he has not been seen publicly. The most recent images shared on his social media appear to be from before his health issues, and he has not made any live appearances. While his office continues to promote legislation and engage with officials in Donald Trump’s administration, his actual involvement remains uncertain.

Kean’s absence comes at a critical juncture for House Republicans, who are contending with a slim majority as they approach the midterm elections. Leadership has had to maneuver closely contested votes, including a recent resolution to end U.S. involvement in Iran that failed by a single vote.

The situation is about to become even more precarious. Democrat Analilia Mejia, who recently won a special election in a neighboring district, is set to enter Congress soon. This shift will adjust the House makeup to 218 Republicans and 214 Democrats, further complicating the GOP’s position with Kean away.

His prolonged absence also poses potential long-term political consequences. Representing New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, a key battleground, Kean is facing four well-funded challengers from the Democratic Party who view the upcoming election as a prime opportunity to flip his seat.
