NFL Journalist Exits Amid Controversy Over Coach Photos

Dianna Russini, recognized for her work with ESPN and other major outlets, has stepped down from The Athletic. This decision comes in light of controversial images showing her and New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel, both married, in close proximity at a luxury resort.

The images, allegedly taken on March 28, were originally published by Page Six. They depict Russini and Vrabel at the adults-only Ambiente resort in Sedona, Arizona, a venue known for its exclusivity and stunning views.

While both parties insisted they were accompanied by a larger group, the photos exclusively feature the two of them in the vacation spot’s cozy ambiance.

These images have sparked scrutiny regarding Russini’s ethical standards in her reporting, especially since she has often covered crucial developments for the Patriots. The Athletic confirmed on Monday that an in-depth investigation into her actions is underway.

Just a day later, Russini made her resignation effective immediately.

In a statement, she declared, “I have covered the NFL with professionalism and dedication throughout my career, and I stand behind every story I have ever published. When the Page Six item first appeared, The Athletic supported me unequivocally, expressed confidence in my work and pride in my journalism. For that I am grateful.”

She added, “In the days that followed, unfortunately, commentators in various media have engaged in self-feeding speculation that is simply unmoored from the facts. Moreover, this media frenzy is hurtling forward without regard for the review process The Athletic is trying to complete. It continues to escalate, fueled by repeated leaks, and I have no interest in submitting to a public inquiry that has already caused far more damage than I am willing to accept.”

Russini concluded by stating her intentions to leave before her contract’s end on June 30, asserting that she would not allow the narrative around the situation to define her career.

Regardless of her resignation, The Athletic plans to proceed with their investigation into Russini’s actions and the surrounding allegations.

“While I can’t share the details of our investigation into Dianna’s conduct, I want to emphasize that the leadership of The Athletic has taken this matter seriously from the moment we learned about it,” said Steven Ginsberg, the outlet’s executive editor, in a statement to The Guardian.

Ginsberg further noted, “When this situation was brought to our attention last week, there were clear concerns, but we received a detailed explanation and it was our instinct to support and defend a colleague while we continued to review the matter.” He added, “As additional information emerged, new questions were raised that became part of our investigation.”
