U.S. Representative Tony Gonzales from Texas revealed on Monday that he will step down from his position in Congress shortly. This follows a resignation announcement by U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) just hours prior.
In his announcement on X, Gonzales reflected, “There is a season for everything and God has a plan for us all. When Congress returns tomorrow, I will file my retirement from office.” He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent the people of Texas.

This decision comes after Gonzales previously halted his re-election campaign, amid revelations of an affair with a staff member who tragically later died by suicide. His colleagues in the House urged him to withdraw from the race when he faced off against Second Amendment advocate Brandon Herrera.
Gonzales acknowledged the affair during an interview on “The Joe Pags Show” in early March. “I made a mistake, and I had a lapse in judgment…,” he stated, taking full responsibility for his actions. He noted that he has since reconciled with his wife and turned to God for forgiveness.
The staffer, Regina Santos-Aviles, served as a regional director in his district and had confided in a coworker before her death in September 2025, discussing the “affair with our boss.”
As he admitted to the affair, Gonzales also announced the suspension of his campaign last month.
His resignation comes as scrutiny increases; not only due to his scandal but also in light of Rep. Swalwell’s departure after multiple allegations of misconduct. The House had been vocal about expelling both representatives if they didn’t resign voluntarily.
Now, attention turns to Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL), recently found guilty in a fraud scheme linked to federal disaster relief. Several Republicans are reportedly pushing to expel her as well.
