Former Baylor women’s basketball standout Melissa Jones has died at the age of 36, as confirmed by the university. She was a remarkable player whose jersey was retired, marking her lasting impact on the program.
Baylor shared the news of her death via an Instagram tribute on Thursday.
“The Baylor Family mourns the loss of 2011 alum Melissa Jones,” the post stated. “Her influence on our women’s basketball program will remain unforgettable. Please keep the Jones family and the Baylor women’s basketball program in your prayers during this time.”
According to her mother, Jones passed away on April 3 at her residence in Commerce City, Colorado, although the cause of death has not yet been disclosed.

A proud resident of Colorado, Jones played for Baylor from 2007 to 2011, helping to elevate the program to national prominence. She played a pivotal role in the Bears’ journey to the Final Four in 2010 and their subsequent Big 12 championship win the following season. She was adored by fans and became the fifth player in Baylor history to have her jersey retired.
Kim Mulkey, the head coach at LSU who led Jones during her time at Baylor, expressed her sorrow at the loss.
“My heart is broken over the loss of Melissa Jones. She was more than just a player to me — she was family. She left an indelible mark on Baylor, transcending basketball, and was cherished by the entire community. I am thankful to have coached and known her. Rest in peace, MJ.”
WNBA star Brittney Griner, who played alongside Jones at Baylor, shared Baylor’s tribute on her Instagram Stories, saying, “You will be missed MJ!”
