Cardinal Sets the Record Straight on Pentagon-Vatican Meeting Rumors

Recent media allegations that senior Pentagon officials issued threats during a meeting with a Vatican diplomat have been categorically denied by both the Holy See and U.S. officials. The claims arose from a discussion involving Under Secretary of Defense Elbridge Colby and Cardinal Christophe Pierre, the papal ambassador to the U.S.

The reports, initially propagated by The Daily Beast, suggested that the January meeting at the Pentagon involved intense criticism of remarks made by Pope Leo XIV about the shift from dialogue to force in international diplomacy.

While some reports indicated that U.S. officials asserted military dominance and demanded the pope align with U.S. positions, such descriptions have been heavily contested.

A Pentagon spokesperson confirmed the meeting took place but described the report as being “highly exaggerated and distorted.” They emphasized that the dialogue was conducted with mutual respect.

Additionally, the Apostolic Nunciature in Washington, D.C., characterized the encounter as routine, expressing gratitude for the chance to engage in discussions about shared concerns.

Vice President JD Vance, when questioned, noted he would review the details further with Cardinal Pierre and U.S. officials, stressing the importance of avoiding comments on unverified claims.
