U.S. Representative Maria Salazar (R-FL) is under fire from Trump loyalists due to her latest initiative, the “DIGNIDAD Act,” which is seen as a pathway to amnesty.
If the legislation were to pass, it would grant legal residency to those who entered the U.S. illegally before President Biden took office in 2021. Under this bill, illegal aliens would have to undergo background checks and pay fines for their time in the country, after which they could obtain legal status.
Salazar has indicated that this proposal could be just the beginning for offering citizenship to millions of illegal immigrants.
The bill includes quick green card distributions, pathways to citizenship for foreign students, and amnesty for DACA recipients, effectively opening doors for around 11 million illegal aliens.
Even though the bill is unpopular among Trump’s core supporters, it has received backing from 19 Republican co-sponsors. Tension escalated recently when U.S. Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) indicated on Fox News that the bill is gaining traction within the Republican conference.
In reaction, U.S. Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) criticized fellow Republicans who support this legislation. He stated, “The Dignidad Act is mass amnesty and constitutes a betrayal of our voters,” in a post on X.
Responding to Gill, Salazar claimed that the bill was aligned with “America First” principles and suggested it would deport illegal aliens with criminal backgrounds. She opposed mass deportations, a significant promise from President Trump, arguing that such actions would harm the economy.
“The ‘DIGNIDAD Act’ offers legal status to about 12 million illegal aliens, boosts legal immigration levels, and expands work visas that threaten American jobs and wages. No matter how you phrase it, this is still amnesty,” Gill retorted. “Mass migration is damaging our working class and community cohesion. Our voters want their country back, and they expect us to uphold mass deportations.”
Salazar, visibly upset, accused Gill of misunderstanding the bill, emphasizing the need for effective enforcement of the law concerning criminal deportations. She reiterated, “This is enforcement-first: we’ve got zero tolerance for criminals, robust border security, and strict measures for those stepping forward for legal status to protect American jobs.”
“Amnesty results in chaos, leaving millions in a hiding state without accountability, and a failing system. We can’t cut corners with law and order. That’s what ‘DIGNIDAD’ stands for.”
READ. THE. BILL. BEFORE. YOU. OPEN. YOUR. MOUTH.
Calling the DIGNITY Act “amnesty” isn’t just wrong. It’s a deliberate distortion and it exposes just how little you know about the bill.

Gill later criticized the bill again, calling it a massive betrayal to those who supported President Trump and the Republican agenda centered on mass deportation.
This heated debate follows calls from parts of Trump’s base for him to retract his endorsement of Salazar, given the circumstances.
