In a shocking event at LaGuardia Airport, a frantic air traffic controller’s plea—”Stop, stop, stop, truck 1, stop”—failed to avert a fatal collision that took the lives of two pilots and injured many more.
The incident transpired late on Sunday as an Air Canada Express CRJ-900, managed by Jazz Aviation, collided with a Port Authority emergency vehicle on Runway 4. This vehicle was responding to a different emergency at the time, as reported by the National Transportation Safety Board alongside airport officials.
Audio recordings from the control tower reveal a controller granting permission for the emergency vehicle to cross, only to hear another voice frantically urging its stop. “Stop, truck 1, stop!” echoes again in the recording, leaving uncertainty about the truck’s response just before the tragedy unfolded.
After the incident, two controllers were heard voicing their disbelief. One mentioned a temporary airport shutdown while another expressed their dismay over witnessing the event. “That wasn’t good to watch,” was the response.

One controller expressed regret, stating, “I was trying to reach out to ‘em to stop. We were dealing with an emergency earlier. I messed up.” In a supportive tone, a colleague replied, “Nah, man, you did the best you could.”
Flight 8646, which was carrying 72 passengers and four crew members from Montreal to New York, lost both pilots according to the Port Authority. Additionally, 41 individuals sought medical attention, with most injuries being serious yet many have since been released.

In response, the Federal Aviation Administration enforced a ground stop, resulting in LaGuardia remaining closed until Monday afternoon as investigators conducted their inquiries. The NTSB and FAA aim to unravel critical factors from this incident, such as the aircraft’s speed and the management of air traffic control during previous emergencies.
