Controversy Erupts Over Prayer Mats at 9/11 Memorial in NYC

The recent decision to display Muslim prayer rugs in front of a memorial honoring firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11 has sparked significant discontent among first responders. Many believe that the observance of Ramadan crossed a line of appropriateness.

Earlier this month, the FDNY Islamic Society organized an iftar, the evening meal during Ramadan, with support from the FDNY and the Mayor’s Office. Mayor Zohran Mamdani was present along with Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore and around 125 attendees.

This year, the event was held inside the FDNY auditorium at Metrotech Plaza, as has been customary. However, for the first time, more than a dozen prayer rugs were laid out in the lobby, adjacent to a memorial displaying the names of firefighters killed on duty, including those from the World Trade Center attacks.

The arrangement provoked outrage among some firefighters and families affected by 9/11. New York City Councilmember Joann Ariola reported receiving over 20 complaints from those who felt disrespected by the event.

An active firefighter expressed concern, stating that the Muslim group and city officials demonstrated a lack of sensitivity. They argued that the auditorium could have been used without disrupting the memorial’s sanctity.

Ariola questioned the choice of location, highlighting that there were many other spaces available for such gatherings. She insisted that the memorial should be treated with utmost respect and preserved as a space for remembrance.

In defense of the event, FDNY representatives stated that they routinely recognize religious observances. Spokeswoman Amanda Farinacci mentioned that the rugs were placed in the lobby due to capacity constraints in the auditorium, insisting there was no intention of disrespect.
