Democratic Leader Warns of Danger from ICE Agents at Airports

Airports across the country are experiencing unprecedented delays as a partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security continues. President Trump has announced that reinforcements are imminent to alleviate long security lines.

The White House plans to send ICE agents to assist at 14 airports, aiming to reduce the wait times as TSA struggles with staffing shortages. Many travelers are now arriving several hours before their flights in hopes of beating the lines.

Travelers Grant and Sarah Pittman shared, “We got here five hours early. Fingers crossed we make it.”

Nationwide, the TSA is facing major staffing challenges, with 3,250 employees, over 11.5% of its workforce, absent over the weekend. Some of the busiest airports are experiencing callout rates of 30% to 40%, leading to compounded delays as many TSA officers go without pay.

TSA Officer Sharre Quick conveyed the frustration felt by workers, stating, “It’s very stressful and frustrating, knowing that I’m still expected to work without pay.”

According to the operational plan, ICE agents are not set to replace TSA officials but will manage crowd control, freeing TSA personnel to focus on screening. Border Czar Tom Homan emphasized that this strategy is designed to expedite travel.

“We can take on non-critical roles, like managing exits, enabling TSA agents to return to the scanners and reduce delays,” Homan explained.

Political Tensions Over DHS Funding

The chaos at airports highlights ongoing tensions regarding DHS funding. With the shutdown now surpassing 40 days, talks have stalled. Democrats are pushing to fund TSA independently while seeking immigration policy changes, including those regarding ICE.

Republicans argue that splitting DHS funding during a period of national security concern, especially amid threats from Iran, is unwise. Many express that having ICE in airports could enhance security.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has pushed back on the ICE deployment, claiming it may endanger travelers. He stated, “The last thing that the American people need are untrained ICE agents to be deployed at airports all across the country, potentially to brutalize or, in some instances, kill them.”

Republicans have dismissed these statements as inflammatory, insisting ICE’s role is to support TSA operations and avoid congestion. The White House maintains that the shutdown is the root of these issues, urging Democrats to approve full funding.

While discussions have resumed in Congress, time is limited. Lawmakers have approximately a week before the Senate adjourns for spring break, with airports preparing for continued surges in travel amidst staffing challenges.
