Fatal Condition Claims Life of Respected Idaho Mayor

A dedicated mayor from Idaho, Rick Hogaboam, has sadly passed away following a rare cardiac complication, as confirmed by the Ada County coroner.

The 47-year-old mayor collapsed during a Treasure Valley Partnership meeting in Eagle on Wednesday night. Eagle Mayor Brad Pike, a former firefighter, was the first to respond, performing CPR until emergency personnel arrived, but Hogaboam died on the scene.

According to the coroner, Hogaboam’s cause of death was identified as cardiac tamponade, a serious condition where fluid builds up around the heart, hindering its ability to function properly.

Medical professionals note that this condition is relatively uncommon and often arises from existing health issues. Treatment is possible through a procedure called pericardiocentesis, where the fluid is drained. However, if untreated, it can be fatal. Symptoms can include low blood pressure and swollen neck veins, although not everyone demonstrates all symptoms.

Hogaboam, a father of five, quickly rose through the ranks of local politics, transitioning from city councilman to mayor in under a decade. He took office in November after defeating three opponents and was inaugurated just two months before his passing.

The city council in Nampa acknowledged the loss at their Thursday meeting by placing flowers at Hogaboam’s vacant seat, as reported by the Idaho Statesman.

“We are devastated, as we had hoped to serve with an extraordinary individual,” remarked Councilwoman Debbie Skaug.

Nampa officials have 90 days to appoint a new mayor, who will serve until the next election in November 2027. In the meantime, colleagues are navigating the shock of losing a leader who was seen as a devoted public servant.

“He had an incredible ability to make every hour count. The best way to honor his legacy is to treat each other with kindness,” stated Councilman Sebastian Gri!n, highlighting the importance of appreciating time together.

A memorial service for Hogaboam is set for March 31 at the Ford Idaho Center.
