Trump Signals Potential for Military Action in the Middle East

President Trump is signaling a potential escalation in U.S. military involvement in the Middle East, specifically regarding Iran’s grip on the Strait of Hormuz.

The Trump administration is reportedly exploring options to occupy or blockade Iran’s Kharg Island, which is crucial to the nation’s oil exports, according to multiple sources. This island plays a key role as it processes roughly 90% of Iran’s crude shipments.

Trump’s strategy appears to be driven by the urgency to end the conflict effectively while managing the continuous threats to oil tankers in the region. As long as Hormuz remains under pressure, energy prices will likely rise.

Any operation involving Kharg Island comes with inherent risks. Deploying U.S. troops close to the area could expose them to Iranian attacks, meaning the Pentagon may opt to delay any actions until they can sufficiently weaken Iran’s missile and drone capabilities.

“We need about a month to weaken the Iranians more with strikes, take the island and then get them by the balls and use it for negotiations,” a knowledgeable source indicated regarding the White House’s planning.

Manpower is also a consideration, with three Marine units already en route to the region. Discussions are underway about whether additional forces are required should the decision be made to proceed with a blockade or occupation of the island.

“He wants Hormuz open. If he has to take Kharg Island to make it happen, that’s going to happen,” a senior administration official noted, emphasizing that a decisive move has yet to be finalized, though options remain on the table.

A second senior official defended the potential for ground involvement, highlighting that historical precedents exist for maintaining U.S. troops in conflicts across various presidencies. The official downplayed any particular focus on this issue by the media.

Support from some Republican lawmakers has been forthcoming. Senator Tom Cotton commended Trump’s strategic flexibility, arguing that Iran’s actions demonstrate their desperation and that the administration has extensive plans should Tehran resist.

Conversely, some critics caution against the uncertainty and risks associated with seizing Kharg Island. Retired Rear Adm. Mark Montgomery pointed out that doing so could expose U.S. forces to significant danger with an unclear outcome.

“If we seize Kharg Island, they’re going to turn off the spigot on the other end,” he stated, noting the limited control the U.S. would have over Iran’s oil production.

Others suggest a more strategic approach might involve a sustained campaign to weaken Iranian capabilities, paired with U.S. and allied escorts for safe passage of commercial vessels through Hormuz.

Trump has made it clear that he views Kharg as a target the U.S. could act upon at any moment.

“We can take out the island anytime we want. I call it the little island that sits there so totally unprotected. We’ve taken out everything but the pipes,” he remarked recently, stressing the importance of tactical decisions regarding military moves.
