Barcelona police have announced a significant development in the search for James “Jimmy” Gracey, a University of Alabama student who disappeared recently. His wallet was found floating near Somorrostro beach, raising hopes in the ongoing investigation.
The 20-year-old from Elmhurst, Illinois, was last seen on March 17, 2026, after a night out with friends at the Shoko restaurant and nightclub. According to his mother, Therese Gracey, the group became separated as the night concluded.
Gracey never returned to his Airbnb accommodation, prompting his friends to alert authorities around 1 a.m. on Wednesday morning.
Search teams have expanded their efforts along the coastline and nearby marinas, employing aquatic units and drones for an enhanced search from the sea. Local police noted that initial searches in the waters near the nightclub yielded no results.
In a significant turn, law enforcement also recovered Gracey’s phone during the arrest of a third-party individual, though details regarding this person remain unclear. The phone’s discovery may contribute to establishing a clearer timeline of events.
The last photograph of Gracey captured him in a white T-shirt and a gold chain with a rhinestone cross, a reminder of the loved ones waiting for news.
Gracey is remembered fondly by his fraternity, Theta Chi, where he serves as chaplain and philanthropy chairman, known for mentoring younger members. Fraternity president Cavin McLay expressed determination, stating, “We’re not going to give up. We’re going to keep looking for him and waiting for him to return safely.”
He emphasized the fraternity’s ongoing support and gratitude towards the local community and authorities, who are diligently working to locate Gracey.
As the search continues, his friends and family remain hopeful for his safe return.
