During his confirmation hearing, Markwayne Mullin, President Trump’s nominee for the Department of Homeland Security, fought to hold back tears as he shared a touching story that highlighted Trump’s character.
Mullin began, “I’m gonna try to get through it without crying,” before describing the serious brain injury his son suffered, transforming him from a “world-class athlete” into a different child after waking.
Upon learning the news, Trump made a light-hearted remark, saying his son might not remember his parents but did recall Trump was president. However, the conversation quickly shifted once the severity of the situation became clear.
Trump offered his private plane so Mullin’s family could reach the Centre for Neuro Skills in California. “We get there, and he called almost every day for two weeks,” Mullin expressed. He shared that Trump even planned to visit.
During the 2020 campaign, Trump made the visit and kept in touch regularly. “Most days, the president would call asking how he could help,” Mullin recalled. “It was genuine, not for show.”
After his son’s recovery, Mullin mentioned Trump inviting them to Mar-a-Lago. There, Trump affectionately told his son, “Do you know why I love your dad?”

Mullin continued, recalling Trump’s answer: “‘Because he loves you. Because of you.’”
“Here’s the president of the United States, acting solely out of care,” Mullin remarked, noting how they transitioned from mere acquaintances to true friends through this experience.
The confirmation hearing occurs amidst significant debates in Washington regarding Homeland Security, ranging from immigration policies to crucial domestic threats. Republicans accuse Democrats of politicizing DHS funding, while Democrats call for reform in enforcement methods. If confirmed, Mullin will oversee a vast department crucial to national security.
