Early Tuesday, the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad was the target of an intense barrage of rockets and drones. Iraqi security sources reported this as one of the most ferocious assaults on the capital since the outbreak of war.
Eyewitnesses noted that the embassy’s C-RAM defense system successfully intercepted two drones, while a third managed to hit a building within the embassy grounds, igniting a fire and sending large plumes of smoke into the air.
Footage circulated on social media displayed air defenses taking down what seemed to be a drone over Baghdad. The moment it was struck was captured, resulting in a significant explosion roughly 1,000 meters from the embassy.
As one person in the video exclaimed, “There it is, there it is,” the incoming drone was intercepted.
A subsequent drone attack was reported on the Al Rasheed Hotel in Baghdad’s Green Zone, where the U.S. Embassy and important Iraqi government facilities are located, often serving as accommodations for foreign diplomats and oil industry professionals.

This escalation at the embassy and hotel came shortly after the death of Abu Ali al-Askari, a high-ranking official in Kataeb Hezbollah, a militia backed by Iran that the U.S. has labeled a terrorist group.
The ongoing tensions in Iraq coincided with Israeli forces launching ground operations in southern Lebanon, specifically targeting Hezbollah positions, further heightening anxieties in a region already fraught with conflict.
