Alexa Ray Joel has shared an uplifting update about her father, the iconic Billy Joel, as he navigates his recovery from a rare brain disorder that’s impacted his touring schedule.
The 40-year-old Alexa confirmed that her father, aged 76, is staying positive and has been doing well since he announced his diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) and canceled concerts last May.
As she prepared for the tribute event at Carnegie Hall, Alexa noted that her father is dedicated to his recovery. “He’s doing physical therapy regularly and he’s doing great. He’s lost weight as he’s on his diet,” she mentioned.
She expressed pride in his determination, calling him a trooper who is committed to his health. “He’s always been a fighter, and talks in his documentary about how life’s like a fight,” she added.
A Meaningful Tribute
The Carnegie Hall tribute had special significance for the Joel family, marking a return to a place that holds many memories for the singer.
“He was so excited when he first played Carnegie Hall in the ‘70s, so it’s thrilling for him to return decades later and see artists honoring his work,” Alexa explained.
Determined to have her father present, she insisted, “Dad, you better be there! This is Carnegie Hall. Everyone’s paying tribute to you!”
Joel attended the event dressed sharply in a black suit, while Alexa Ray graced the stage in a stunning strapless black dress. The celebration highlighted his musical legacy during Michael Dorf Presents: The 21st Annual Music Of concert, attracting over 3,500 attendees and raising more than $225,000 for music education.
Previously, Joey addressed public concerns about his health, reassuring fans that he was managing his condition. “I know a lot of people are worried about me and my health, but I’m OK,” he stated.
He mentioned that while the situation was daunting, he was focused on recovering. “I just wanted to let people know, don’t worry about me being deathly ill,” he said.
The legendary musician is a father to three daughters: Alexa Ray with ex-wife Christie Brinkley, and two younger daughters, Della Rose and Remy Anne, with wife Alexis Roderick.
