Recently, a U.S. Navy aircraft often dubbed the “Doomsday Plane” was seen flying in circles over California’s Central Valley, captivating local onlookers. The sizable jet made several low passes near a significant airport, prompting many to take notice.
Residents observed the aircraft circling around Fresno Yosemite International Airport for nearly two hours, leading some to speculate about its purpose as photos and flight tracking data spread across social media.
Airport representatives later disclosed that the plane was executing training protocols that involved simulated landings and approach exercises.
This aircraft is the Boeing E-6B Mercury, a unique U.S. Navy command-and-control jet crucial to the nation’s nuclear command framework. Operated by the Navy’s Strategic Communications Wing, it ensures communication with U.S. nuclear forces in the event of a national crisis.
Due to its vital mission, the aircraft has earned the nickname “Doomsday Plane.”

The E-6B Mercury is a significantly modified Boeing 707 designed to execute what the military calls the TACAMO operation, which stands for “Take Charge and Move Out.” This aircraft acts as an airborne communications link capable of sending launch commands and strategic messages to U.S. ballistic missile submarines, bombers, and other nuclear assets, even if ground communication is compromised.
One notable feature of the plane is its long trailing antenna, allowing communication with submarines situated deep underwater. It can also function as an airborne command hub, coordinating military units during a crisis.
Although sightings of the aircraft can cause concern, military experts typically classify these flights as standard practice. Strategic communications planes routinely conduct training missions throughout the United States to maintain operational readiness.
These operations often include navigation drills, communication testing, and practice landings at civilian airports. In this instance, officials confirmed that the aircraft was merely performing routine approaches and simulated landings at the Fresno facility.
