Three Arrested Following U.S. Embassy Bombing in Oslo

On Wednesday, Norwegian police reported the arrest of three brothers in Oslo in connection with a recent bombing outside the U.S. embassy. This incident, which took place just three days prior, has raised significant security alarms.

Currently, the suspects, all Norwegian citizens of Iraqi descent in their 20s, were not previously known to law enforcement. Police Attorney Christian Hatlo addressed the media, revealing that the brothers face charges under Section 138 of the Norwegian Penal Code for terrorist activities.

Details of the Bombing

Hatlo emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, “They are suspected of a terror bombing.” It is believed that a powerful bomb was detonated at the embassy with the intent to inflict casualties or cause major damage.

One of the brothers is suspected of placing the improvised explosive device (IED) at the embassy’s entrance, while the others involved in its planning and execution were also taken into custody around 3:30 p.m. local time.

The investigation is still active as authorities work to uncover each suspect’s specific involvement, motives, and any potential connections to foreign state actors or criminal networks. To date, no identities have been revealed publicly, nor have additional arrests been ruled out.

The bombing occurred at approximately 1 a.m. local time on March 8, resulting in minor damage to the building, although thankfully, no injuries were reported. The police quickly categorized the incident as a targeted attack, initially exploring terrorism as a motive.

Link to Global Tensions

Witnesses described a smoke-filled street following the blast, which some speculate might connect to broader geopolitical issues, including the ongoing U.S.-Israeli military actions against Iran, although investigators have yet to confirm any direct links.

Surveillance footage displayed a hooded figure in dark attire carrying a bag, whom police are actively trying to identify as a possible suspect. Local authorities are collaborating with federal officials from the U.S. for further investigation.

The U.S. State Department has categorized the event as an ongoing “incident,” prompting American embassies around the world to heighten security due to increasing tensions in the Middle East. The bombing had a brief impact on the embassy’s normal activities, but consular services resumed shortly afterward with enhanced safety measures.

This bombing in Oslo followed closely after gunfire was reported at the U.S. consulate in Toronto, Canada, raising questions about potential links to terrorism in both incidents.
