Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran’s newly appointed supreme leader, has shared his first public statement as rumors escalate about his serious health condition. Speculations suggest he may be in a coma and even missing a leg following recent U.S.-Israeli airstrikes that claimed his father’s life.
Instead of appearing publicly, Khamenei’s message was delivered via Iranian state television, with an anchor reading his words while displaying his image on screen.
Promises of Retaliation
In his declaration, Khamenei pledged to maintain the closure of the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping and warned of retaliation. He asserted, “We will avenge the blood of our martyrs.”

He expressed gratitude towards the fighters defending the nation during this challenging time: “I would like to thank the brave fighters who are doing a great job at a time when our country is under pressure and under attack.”
Questions Surrounding His Condition
Khamenei’s absence from a succession rally on Monday has fueled further concern over his ability to lead. Since succeeding his father after the February 28 strikes, he has not appeared in public.
Reports vary regarding his condition, with sources claiming he is in intensive care at Sina University Hospital in Tehran. One claim suggested significant injuries, stating, “One or two of his legs have been cut off,” and indicated he might be in a coma.
Other reports, however, portray a less severe scenario, citing only minor wounds from the airstrikes, such as a fractured foot and facial injuries.
Projecting Power from the Shadows
The regime’s choice to issue a statement via state television, without a live appearance, raises doubts about Khamenei’s leadership. In a system reliant on displays of strength, a leader who is unseen poses a significant challenge. As tensions persist and threats regarding Hormuz intensify, Khamenei appears to be attempting to assert authority from the shadows.
