Thom Tillis Draws Backlash From Trump Supporters After Heated DHS Exchange

Outgoing Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) sparked backlash from Trump supporters over a heated exchange with DHS Secretary Kristi Noem during testimony this week.

Noem appeared before the House Judiciary Committee following the fatal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, who were identified as anti-ICE extremists assaulting federal immigration agents.

The hearing examined DHS operations, including immigration enforcement, FEMA disaster response, and the effects of the partial government shutdown on agency funding.

Dispute Over Enforcement Priorities

Most Republicans voiced support for the administration’s border security priorities during the hearing.

Tillis stood out with a contentious critique of DHS enforcement that many Trump backers saw as siding against law enforcement and common-sense deportation goals.

The senator argued for prioritizing “quality” over “quantity” in deportations and suggested broad removals should be off the table.

He also complained about Americans being mistakenly detained, a claim critics said ignored the violent circumstances in many encounters with agents.

Tillis questioned command structure and asked who border czar Tom Homan reported to, and Noem answered that he reports to the president.

Critics warned that added oversight and review requirements would effectively neuter deportation efforts.

Controversy and Defense of DHS

Tillis controversially suggested that Pretti and Good may not have deserved to be shot, despite video and reports showing they attacked agents.

He called for multiple law enforcement agencies and the FBI to investigate, saying mistakes had to be acknowledged.

Noem defended the department’s record and emphasized efforts to address border challenges inherited from the prior administration.

She described the shutdown as reckless, saying it undermines national security and harms DHS workers and their families.

Noem was scheduled to appear again before the committee the following day.
